Cooking with Dungeons & Dragons

Maybe one day our crowd won't be such anti-social goombas.

My game "crowd" includes AI programmers, astrophysicists, sommeliers, and editors. Maybe YOUR crowd is anti-social. ; }

La-de-dah. Here's your gold star. I was talking about the community as a whole, and even those astrophysicists, etc. can be asshats.

I know an engineer who was one of the main people working on one of the martian landers, and I don't game with him because he's a dick when he games.

I have to jump in Laura's corner, here. While the gamers I hang out with aren't really in the "crowd", my possé has a distinct lack of dickery in our game sessions or game-related activities.

That being said, Lore Sjöberg is a funny mother fucker.

I'm not saying that we all have jerks playing in our games. I'm saying that to the general a lot public gamers come off as conceited asshats. I'm looking at the RPGA crowd specifically and the WW "Freak the Norms" in general.

To me, that's more "I hate people who are dicks" and not "the 'public' thinks that a lot of Roleplayers are dicks". I've met a lot of dicks, not all of which were gamers, but I didn't hold it against their activity.

I guess I take exception to anything that plays on the stereotype instead of participating in the solution of destigmatizatiatizing it. I'd rather go drink wine and play Bacchanalia with Paul then hang around with a jerk doing absolutely anything.

It just seems that when I go into a FLGS and scan the population there is a higher percentage of Dicks and Social Idiots than you would find in your average McDonalds/Target/Neiman Marcus.

I used to have them in my group years ago when I had an open game. I tend to only play closed games now, i.e., by invite and 100% agreement from existing players. Solves almost all the problems you describe.

And the stereotype exists *because* those types exists. Those of us that are NOT like that need to teach others the reality of it. That those goombas are the exception, not the rule.

Personally, I just hand them their asshat when they get out of line. I am well versed in the arts of war. :)

Oh I know. I'm not worried about them in my game, I'm just annoyed that they still give us a bad name because they're so prevalent in our culture. I think we've improved, but it still isn't great compared to some other sucultures.
