I got my old CB-1 Bridgestone back from my parent's almost a month ago and have been riding it on average four nights a week - my goal is five. Above is an almost exact picture of what it looks like. It just started creaking around the front fork, but I can't find any cracks - it might be the front breaks - I bought the bike new in 1992. That is why I am glad that I am purchasing a real road bike to help me out. I got a smokin' deal on a 2007 new Fuji Newest 3.0:
I'm buying all the accessories for it, including cleats and clips for the pedals, repair kit, lights, kevlar tires, bike computer etc.. I put it on layaway two weeks ago and ever two weeks I'm putting money towards the bike and buying extra equipment. I already purchased a helmet, gloves and a riding jacket. By the time I'm done I should have enough points from the Performance Bike (the store I'm buying from) to pay for the pedals and the tires.
Why am I doing this you wonder. Because I am fat. That's right. I am tall at 6'3", and I have broad shoulders and a huge chest. I could've been a football player. Yet, even though I've had doctors tell me that weighing 250lbs is okay for a guy my size, I am well past that. I'd be optimum weight at 235lbs and I weighed 318.2 pounds before I started riding my bike. I once told myself that I would never get fat like some of the guys I used to see hanging out at my game shop, and I've come perilously close, not only in weight (I probably outweight a few of them because every inch of 6' adds a lot of weight, especially in the chest area), but in the dreaded belly fat region.
I used to ride a ton as a kid all the way through High School. I guess living on a hill in college killed it for me. Now I'm getting back into the groove. My speed and distance is pathetic compared to what I used to do, but it is already getting better quicker than I hoped. I am hoping that someday I will be able to casually ride the routes of the President of my local bike club. He averages 18mph when cruising and rides 25 miles a day. His longer weekend trips are 30-50 miles and he's biked marathons of over 200 miles.
A final note as of 2/6/2009 I weighed 305.6 pounds.
