Writing is Work

I love writing.  I write all day for work.  I write reports, I write ad copy, and I even dabble in strategic business planning.  When I get home I have a daughter and a wonderful wife to spend time with, a house to clean and keep up, two dogs to care for, and a second business Restori to help.  I also have an on-going legal case I am dealing with, an out of shape body that desperately needs all the bike riding it can take, and bills to pay.

What does this all mean?  It means that the time I need for writing is not there.  I know where my bread gets buttered and that means I need to spend time with the things that matter the most.  Maslow's Hierarchy comes to mind.  Will I have the time for future personal actualization?  In the future, maybe, but not right now.  John Adams said it best:

"I must study politics and war that my sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy. My sons ought to study mathematics and philosophy, geography, natural history, naval architecture, navigation, commerce and agriculture in order to give their children a right to study painting, poetry, music, architecture, statuary, tapestry, and porcelain."

I am stuck studying commerce.  Maybe my children will get to study the arts.

To my friends who write

I am looking for websites that print short stories in various genres - scifi, post-cyberpunk, political being my strong points.  I'm ordering a directory of short story magazines, but with the way print media is going, I'm not sure that is the direction I want to go.

Does anyone have any ideas/thoughts/comments?

Back to Sea!

emily and ben
Both literally and prosaically.  The honeymoon is set and Emily and I are going to be taking a cruise along the Western edge of the Caribbean Sea.  We're visiting Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize, and Roatan.

I am also beginning to work again on my Piratical RPG.  After having taken time off to focus on gaining custody of Morgan and planning for my wedding I can now begin to ease back into writing for my game.  I am doing some groundwork to get back up to speed and beginning in April after the wedding I am going to be going full bore at the game again.

I've had several eureka moments during my break and I hope I can incorporate them into my system fully.  One of the major ideas was a holistic format regarding stories and legends.  In my head atm, because besides a few hastily scrawled notes that is where this all exists, this new format idea is a step beyond story games/story teller type systems.  In those the players took an active part in telling a story together.  In my new idea characters are actively working together to create a Legend.  I've combed inspiration such unlikely sources as Aces & Eights, Joseph Campbell (well, he's pretty likely), and the powerful Advertising group and meme known as "Character".

I am excited about this as it will move my game in the direction that I have been wanting and will even help build a system that can be used as a foundation for numerous other game settings.  Gah, I never thought I'd be working on a GURPS/D20/WoD.  Heh, we'll see if I can pull this off.

Regard Writing and Time Travel

Here are some interesting Time Travel ideas for the fiction writer.

Interestingly enough, I find the idea of multiple time lines the most likely.  Even if we go back in time and change it, we are now in our own time line, and every choice we make splits into another time line.  For the people in the future we came from, nothing has changed, they continue going on as if nothing happened, since in their past nothing has, but in my past, it has changed, so if I went forward, to me, it would seem as if I could change the past, but to the original quantum versions of my colleagues it would be as if I was lost to the ether of time.  Once you go back in time you are irrevocably stuck in a new time line.

Example below:

Original Time Line:
--------------------------------ME*
*<- - - - - - Time Travel- - - -/
\
 \____New Time Line___

The point at which I travel back to instantly becomes a new time line and I can never reach that point on a quantum level again and as a philosopher said, "Step back into the same river twice."
